Here's a breakdown of the different types of wheelchairs:
Self-Propelled Wheelchairs
Self-propelled wheelchairs are simply a chair with big wheels on the rear to allow the user to independently propel themselves, the push-rims fitted at the rear make manoeuvring the chair easy. This option is great for people who still have good upper body strength and is also a way of keeping fit with limited mobility. The ergonomic handles at the back of the chair provide an alternative method to move around, with the option to be pushed also available.
Transit Wheelchairs
Transit wheelchairs have smaller wheels and are often lighter than the self-propelled wheelchairs. The smaller wheels mean the chair is more manageable and easier to manoeuvre around areas with limited space. The only option for moving in this chair is to be attended by another individual.
Prescription Wheelchairs
Prescription wheelchairs are customised to meet the specific needs and requirements of individual users. They may include features such as specialised seating systems, custom frame modifications and additional accessories to ensure comfort and functionality. Prescription wheelchairs are prescribed by healthcare professionals based on a thorough assessment of the user's physical condition and mobility needs.
Manual Wheelchair FAQs
The price of a basic manual wheelchair starts at around £200, making them a practical choice for many users.
Custom wheelchairs typically begin at £650. These models are tailored to meet particular user needs, including adjustments for size, weight distribution and comfort features.
Manual wheelchairs generally weigh between 9KG and 15KG, but the weight can vary depending on the design and materials used in construction. Lightweight models are often preferred for their ease of transport and manoeuvrability.
Pushing someone in a wheelchair can vary in difficulty depending on the type of wheelchair and the terrain. Transit wheelchairs may be particularly challenging to push on uneven surfaces or inclines. It is important to use proper techniques and body alignment when pushing.
Yes, wheelchairs with larger rear wheels are generally easier to push and provide a smoother ride. The increased wheel size offers better traction on various surfaces, which can enhance the overall mobility experience. A wheelchair equipped with larger wheels can significantly improve usability and comfort for users.
To effectively push a manual wheelchair, maintain a straight back with your arms close to your body. Use your body weight and legs to generate power. When stationary in the chair, always ensure both brakes are engaged.
Manoeuvring yourself in a self-propelled wheelchair requires a fair amount of upper body strength. To move the chair, simply use the wheel rim on the rear wheel to go forward, backwards, and change direction.
To fold a manual wheelchair, simply pull the centre of the seat upwards, and the chair will come together. Additionally, the footplates can both be removed, and the handles at the rear of the chair can be folded down to reduce the height of the folded chair. On a self-propelled wheelchair, the big rear wheels can also be removed by simply using the push button on the centre of the wheel.
Cleaning your wheelchair is straightforward – just use water and a gentle cleaning solution with a cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals to protect the paintwork. Most cushions can be removed and cleaned separately.
